Rush Hour

Pop. Pop.
Corn kernels split apart as the popcorn fluffs.
Steamy, sweltering summer heat washes across the city.

In the mass of heaving panting crowds desperate to get somewhere...the call of the metro train is what rules the denizens.
If you miss the train, you’ll be late for your job.

Tick Tock.

The digital clock flashes its scarlet letters and every eye
is glued to it as though life hangs in the balance. The station is packed and when the train arrives the crowd springs into action.

The city that never catches its breath is trapped in the glamour and glitz of a promise shimmers like an illusion.

Reality waits at the metro station for the train.
Reality hangs with the passengers as they shove, jostle and stand gripping onto overhead rails.

Splitting like popcorn kernels at the promise of tomorrow.

rush hour grinding gears
living an ongoing race
swiftly roaring train

Written for dVerse Haibun Monday: Pressure.

Nothing is more stressful than catching a train in a metro city…driving in one comes a close second. I’ve felt the worst pressure of my life in a jam packed station. Sadly it is common for people to even lose their lives in a rush to catch that train.
