The Despondent Voyager

On the gritty shore
stands a man
a husk of who
he used to be

drawn and gaunt
despondency
gnaws and consumes
what’s left of him

a woeful expression
saddled with a baggage
of a traumatic fate
a plea for release

arises in the furrow
of his weathered brow
freedom from this exile
is his only mercy

this old ship captain
losing to the wave
anchored to the shore
awaiting the horn

as the sea stays calm
as the seagulls mock
the phantom of a returning ship
that shall set him free
